Spiritual gifts sometimes are shown in different traditions as speaking in tongues, dramatic healings, or even exorcisms—but what are they really? In the United Methodist Church, spiritual gifts are understood as the unique abilities given by the Holy Spirit to every believer for the purpose of building up the church and serving others. Rather than being rare or flashy, they are often practical and relational. Examples are teaching, encouragement, leadership, generosity, and compassion. At their core, spiritual gifts are less about extraordinary moments and more about how each person is uniquely equipped to participate in God’s work in everyday life.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance observed by Christians as a time of preparation for Easter. Beginning with the imposition of ashes on the foreheads, that symbolizes our own mortality and repentance before God. The practice is a powerful, tangible reminder of the need for humility, reflection, and the turning away from sin toward God as we contemplate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Ash Wednesday invites us into a season of deeper spiritual engagement and renewal. We know that traditional church isn't working for many people, maybe because it isn't exactly what Jesus had in mind when he called his followers to "make disciples."
Join us as we experiment with what it looks like to follow Jesus here and now in today's world. http://thevineumc.church
